To become a doctor you must attend a medical school. You must get a license to practice once you earned the title of doctor.
To become a Somm, you can just have a glass of wine and call yourself a Somm. There is no Somm police that is going to whisk you away from a fine dining restaurant. He or she who serves the wine can call themselves the Somm.
The days of seeing a wine list curated by a true dedicated certified Somm are gone with the days of seeing blacksmiths advertising on Facebook.
To tell you the truth, with all these corporate restaurant wine lists with the same Costco wines , why would I need to hire a dedicated Somm to be an order taker for a glass of Meiomi ? I don’t need a 6 figure certified Somm to change the brand name corporate list and make all the wines from Croatia in their place !
I practice what I Preach. For 30 years I bring my own bottle of wine to every single restaurant even a pizza joint. I suggest you do the same. Not to be snobby, but at least you can drink something outing the ordinary that won’t be on most wine lists.
It’s such a shame that like a doctor I did go to school and I did pass my certified sommelier level 2 exams but I’m of no use to any corporate restaurant. I’m just an overpaid blacksmith in a world of electric automobiles
