D-Collection Champagne, D-elicious!

All In The Families

Devaux Home

This is the home of Champagne Devaux. Founded in 1846 by brothers Jules and Auguste Devaux, Champagne Devaux was then managed by three inspiring women who led the family winery with remarkable energy and talent in equal measure.

The first woman, Claude-Joseph Devaux (born Ducray), widowed at 39 years old, founded and managed the house “Maison Vve A. Devaux″ in 1846 in Epernay with her son François-Auguste. His wife, Augusta-Maria Herbin, was to become the second “Devaux widow″ following his death in 1879. She was in charge of the winery until 1895.

Then in 1907, following the death of Charles-Auguste Devaux, the third “Devaux widow” born Hussenot, took over the reins and managed the winery until her death in 1951 at the age of 80, thus concluding an extraordinary saga of “Champagne widows″. She was succeeded by her two sons.

From 1987 Till Present Day

The last in the Devaux line, Jean-Pol Auguste Devaux, was without an heir. As such, in 1987 he entrusted the future of Devaux – a brand with a prestigious past and an exciting future – to Laurent Gillet, President of the “Union Auboise”* (then supplier for the DEVAUX “Blanc de Noirs” champagne). Since February 2019, Mr Pascal Dubois succeeded to Mr Gillet.

Maison Devaux originally founded by a single family, Maison DEVAUX now represents many families. Indeed, this was handed down more than 30 years ago – with a long-term vision – to thier families of winemakers. They have all engaged in a human endeavour based on cooperation, and high quality standards.

Devaux Aged

Devaux Rear

From a strict selection of Pinot noir and Chardonnay plots, in which a small part is vinified as a red wine, this champagne is aged 5 years. The magnums of this get aged a minimum of 7 years before release. This is 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which is rare. The Pinot Noir is sourced from the Cotes Des Bar and the Chardonnay from the Cotes Des Blancs. The 5 years of aging is what makes this so special and their “D” Collection the epitome of their lineup at Devaux.

My Review

Devaux Glass and Bottle

A beautiful salmon to coral pink color in the glass with fine bubbles and a creamy mousse. Aromas pop out of the glass of Brioche Bread with wild strawberry, raspberry and floral notes very present. On the palate, this is creamy, vibrant of a mixture of red currant, red raspberry, pomegranate  with the chardonnay giving this some apricot flavors sailing on to a juicy, vibrant over the top Rose Champagne finish! . The 5 years aging really makes the difference. This is a beauty and may be one of my favorite Rose Champagnes that I have had in years. A little pricey but not compared to it’s commercial brands in the category at $69.99  Perfect with Pate, Shellfish, Chinese Food (I found out by trial and error lol) or for desserts or brunch with some French Toast with Strawberries or a nice piece of cheesecake. I score this 95 out of 100. It just is a fabulous Champagne for you Bubbly Fans!

The Right Glassware MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Devaux Rose Glass

First I want to disclose that none of these glasses were donated for review or promotional purposes. I buy them myself because they are the finest line of glassware I have used in years.

If you would like to enjoy the elegance of drinking out of these handcrafted precision made glasses with or without the Swarovski Crystals you can order from Juliannaglassware.com. They are lead free and from Slovakia.

I have tasted this champagne on other occasions and these Lotus Glasses that are not yet ready to order (I Was Sold From Anna a Set of Samples She had) are designed perfectly for Champagne or bubbly of any kind especially a Rose. Not just from Aesthetics but the shape of the glassware, gave out more aromatics and more vibrancy to the flavors. The nose was more yeasty and the mousse as you can see was beautiful more so than a Standard Flute. Try the difference if you want for yourself. I use all of Julianna Glassware for Red, White and Bubbles. There is nothing on the market like these today.

Grape-fully yours, Larry
